The HCS Guidance Counseling Department works with all secondary HCS students in areas of academic achievement, career choices, and personal, social, and spiritual development. Guidance counselors work one-on-one with students and parents to achieve these ends. Each spring, HCS administers the Iowa Assessments standardized tests for Kindergarten through 10th grade, to measure student achievement and growth.

For college preparation, HCS administers the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT) to all 11th grade students in the fall of their junior year and provides access to ACT/SAT test preparation resources. Guidance counselors link students with college information as well as scholarship and internship/career opportunities. HCS also occasionally conducts college visit trips, notably during spring break, to out-of-state colleges.  Students experience college classrooms and campus life, while also speaking with college students (alumni), professors, and administration as they seek God’s will in their life post-graduation.
